Kishanchand “Bewas” (full name Kishanchand Tirath Das Khatri) was born on 19 March 1885 in Memon Mohalla of Larkana, Sindh. His family originally came from Multan and migrated to Larkana around the eighteenth century. He worked as a primary school teacher and later became a headmaster, writing poetry under the pen name “Bewas”. After retiring in 1940, he took up the family profession of herbal medicine (hikmat). According to Maulana Gramai, he was the originator of simple, sweet, popular Sindhi poetry and was among the first to abandon the classical “gul-o-bulbul” Iranian–Urdu style in favour of natural, pure Sindhi expression. He also participated in Congress and the Khilafat movement, was a follower of Gandhi, and strongly supported Hindu–Muslim harmony. Because of his government job, he published patriotic songs and stirring poems in newspapers under the name of his student Hondraj “Dukhail”. His lifestyle was very simple and he disliked foreign luxury goods, and his books “Sheerin Sher” and a Sindhi adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” were approved as high school textbooks. Among his noted students were Hondraj “Dukhail” and Professor Ram Panjwani. He passed away on 23 September 1947 in Larkana.
